One Skein Cowl – FREE Pattern!

1 Skein Cowl - Free Pattern

What do you do when you only have one yummy skein of yarn? Well you make a cowl of course.

I had this ball of Drops Big Delight and another ball of Rico Free Style Chunky, and of course, living in Ireland, the weather at the minute is pretty crap, so making up some quick cowls was a no brainer.

I was going to just use the puff stitch and make one similar to the one over here.  So I started, but instead of using the puff stitch along the way, I was doing a cluster stitch hmmmm. I didn’t want to frog it back, I hate doing that, so I just kept going with the round and decided to double crochet for the next round but in the back loops to give it a nice little ridge effect. So it turned out well in the end.

Here it is …..

Quick & Simple Free Patter for 1 Skein Cowl

I am Loving this yarn and need to get more, This colour is called Raspberry Cake and the colour effect is just lovely.

I have written down the pattern if you want to try, so here it is ….

Materials:
100g of Drops Big Delight – this was an aran weight yarn. 100% Wool and the colour I used was called Raspberry Cake
Hook: 5mm

Stitches:
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
dcblo – double crochet in black loop
Cl – Cluster stitch ( Yarn round hook, insert hook into stitch, yarn around hook and pull through, you will have 3 loops, yarn around hook and insert in same space, yarn around and pull through loop, you will have 5 loops.  Yarn around hook and pull through all 5 loops )

Start: Chain 85 & slip stitch to the beginning chain to form a loop.   I don’t like cowls too loose around my neck, I like them to sit up high so this was enough for me.
Row 1: ch1, 1dc all around (85 sts) join with sl st
Row 2: ch3, 1cl stitch in same stitch, then 1cl stitch in each stitch around, join with sl st
Row 3: Ch1, 1dc blo in each stitch around, join with sl st
Row 4: Repeat row 2
Row 5: Repeat row 3 and keep repeating these rows.

I continued until I ran out of yarn.  I did 9 rows in total with the cluster stitch, 1 row of double crochet and 12 rows of double crochet in the back loop, I ended the cowl with 3 rows of double crochet in the back loop.

The double crochet in the back loop gives a nice effect

See nice and quick and just in time for the cold snap we are having at the minute.

Gorgeous colours and a great stitch idea. You don;t want anything that uses too much yarn when it’s in limited supply do you? Crochet can seem to eat up the yarn more than knitting.

This is lovely! Not quite the weather for it in Melbourne at the moment but definitely one to try in the cooler months. I’m whipping up the Nordic hat pattern and squirrelling away a few to donate to charity for chillier days.
